Not Built For This
We used to think of climate change in future tense, as something we’d have to deal with decades from now. But the past few years of seemingly never-ending disasters have made it clear that climate change is happening now. California’s fire season is no longer just a season, but a year-round event. 100-year storms now hit our coasts every few years. Intense rain events are washing away mountainsides and drowning downtowns. And extreme heat is making parts of the Southwest nearly unlivable during the summer months. 99% Invisible’s Not Built For This looks at how these dynamics are playing out right now, in communities across the country, from Vermont to California, and from southwest Florida to central Arizona and the Louisiana coast.

The 99% Invisible Breakdown: The Power Broker
99PI’s first audio book club, The 99% Invisible Breakdown: The Power Broker was a year-long podcast series where co-hosts Roman Mars and Elliott Kalan delve into Robert Caro’s seminal 1974 biography, The Power Broker. This comprehensive series examines the life and influence of urban planner Robert Moses, exploring how his unappointed authority shaped New York City’s infrastructure, often at the expense of communities. Each episode dissects specific chapters, featuring discussions with notable guests like Conan O’Brien and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, offering diverse perspectives on Moses’s enduring impact on urban development and power dynamics.

According to Need
In less than five years (between 2015 and 2019) the rate of homelessness doubled in Oakland. Reporter Katie Mingle has a simple question with a complex answer: “What are we doing about all of it?” The way homelessness has exploded here over the last decade, you’d think there was no system in place to address it. But there is one. It just wasn’t designed to help everyone. Katie spent two years trying to understand how we’re helping the hundreds of thousands of people living without adequate shelter in America today. The result is According to Need, a short-run documentary series from 99% Invisible in 5 chapters.
